If you’re in spring cleaning mode, tackling your windows and mirrors is probably on your to-do list. But sometimes cleaning your windows and mirrors can make them look dirtier than before. There are plenty of tips for getting a streak free clean—but put down the newspaper. Here’s what you need for a perfect shine.

1) The right cloth.

Paper towels leave lint behind, regular cleaning rags have rough fibers that leave an uneven finish, and newspaper bleeds ink onto your mirrors and windows. Instead, use a flat-weave microfiber cleaning cloth. It’s gentle enough for glass and the fine fibers prevent cleaning product buildup while drying evenly.

2) Rubbing alcohol.

Use rubbing alcohol to tackle the worst spots on your mirrors and windows first, like toothpaste or dirt. Quickly wipe these areas away and move on to the next step before the rubbing alcohol dries.

3) Glass cleaner.

Using a cleaner specially formulated for glass will help prevent streaks on your mirrors and windows. Spray the cleaner evenly on the mirror or window, then work down in a zig-zag pattern with the microfiber cleaning cloth to prevent streaks. Use a second cloth if the mirror isn’t dry, working down in the same pattern.
