Sleeping problems can affect your energy and mood throughout the day—not to mention no one wants to wake up in the middle of the night from a great dream. If you toss and turn throughout the night, here are five tricks for a more peaceful night’s sleep.
1) Add white noise.
If the smallest sounds wake you up in the middle of the night, or you often feel like the room is just too quiet to fall asleep, adding a white noise machine can help you sleep soundly until morning.
2) Eat more magnesium.
Magnesium plays a key role in our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. Introduce more magnesium rich foods like spinach, chard, black beans, and yogurt into your diet. Taking a magnesium supplement can also help you get your daily dose.
3) Smell soothing essential oils.
Lavender oil can help you fall asleep, but an essential oil diffuser can deliver aromatherapy throughout the night without heat or an open flame.
4) Block out light.
Light sleepers may be light sensitive. Block out light from electronics and windows with a breathable silk sleep mask.
5) Start a sleep journal.
For chronic light sleepers, a journal that tracks diet, exercise, and sleeping patterns can be essential for getting to the root of the problem. Make a note of the nights you sleep well, and try to copy any healthy habits you recorded for those days.
